The mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tom Barrett, was beaten bloody on Saturday night as he rescued a grandmother and 1-year-old girl from a young man who police described as a violent and vicious thug and a "local knucklehead".

Barrett today is recovering in hospital from head and hand wounds, with local media speculating he received the latter after punching his assailant. Milwaukee police have arrested 20-year-old Anthony Peters in the attack, though he has not been charged. The mother of Peters's ex-girlfriend and his baby daughter were unhurt.


On Saturday night Barrett was leaving the Wisconsin state fair with his sister, niece and two daughters when he heard a woman crying for help. Barrett, who was walking to his car, instructed his sister to take the children out of harms way, then confronted the intoxicated man and tried to calm him. The man had threatened to shoot himself and others, police said.
When Barrett took out his mobile phone to call authorities, the man attacked him with a pipe, police said. Barrett's niece retrieved the phone and called police. The attacker fled upon hearing police sirens.


Barrett, a iron hemoglobin code -->  55-year-old former state legislator and five-term US congressman, was first elected in 2004 and was re-elected in 2008 with 79% of the vote. Milwaukee, a former brewing capital, has a population of about 600,000. It is about 80 miles north of Chicago in the US mid-west.






Captain James Lutz was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend two suspects who had robbed the Bank One at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 83 in Wales, Wisconsin.

After robbing the bank, the suspects fled towards Waukesha with officers in pursuit. Captain Lutz joined the pursuit on Meadowbrook Road in Waukesha. He was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire while pursuing the suspects. The suspects, who were a father and son, then abandoned their car and fled on foot. As officers moved in the suspects car-jacked another car and fled.

The suspects were forced to abandon their second car when they turned down a dead-end road. They fled on foot and broke into a house where they held the female homeowner hostage. The suspects then forced the female to drive them in her van in another escape attempt. As the van approached a police checkpoint, the suspects and police exchanged gunfire and the female hostage was able to jump free from the van. The suspects were able to get about 300 yards from the roadblock before crashing their van.

They were then taken into custody by officers. The father and son were both convicted of murder and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 100 years.

Captain Lutz had served with the Waukesha Police Department for 29 years.

The Charleston church shooting (also known as the Charleston church massacre[6][7][8]) was a mass shooting that took place at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, United States, on the evening of June 17, 2015. During a prayer service, nine people were killed by a gunman, including the senior pastor, state senator Clementa C. Pinckney; a tenth victim survived. The morning after the attack, police arrested a suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Dylann Roof, in Shelby, North Carolina. Roof later confessed that he committed the shooting in hopes of igniting a race war.

It was the deadliest shooting in Colorado since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. Prior to the shooting, Holmes rigged his apartment with homemade explosives, which were defused by a bomb squad one day after the shooting.

On Saturday 21 September 2013, unidentified gunmen attacked Westgate shopping mall, the most upscale mall in Nairobi,[4] Kenya. The attack resulted in at least 67 deaths, and more than 175 people were reportedly wounded in the mass shooting.
The extremist Islamic group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the incident, which it characterised as retribution for the Kenyan military's deployment in the group's home country of Somalia. Many media outlets also suspected the insurgent group's involvement in the attack based on earlier reprisal warnings it had issued in the wake of Operation Linda Nchi from 2011 to 2012.

Snow's position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:
A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?[5]
I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had.[5]
